KARACHI – The National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) has concluded a high-level probe implicating the current Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Asim Munir, and his family, marking a significant development in the investigation into individuals responsible for a data leak.
The investigation into the incident, which involved “illegally-accessed information” that was allegedly used in a “effort to prevent the nomination of the present army chief last November,” was concluded by NADRA, according to a report in The News, on the directive of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
A female member of Gen. Asim Munir Shah’s family, it was said, had her data accessed by a junior data entry operator at NADRA, who then allegedly took the family’s information and identity card numbers.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) allegedly used the private information in its Integrated Border Management System (IBMS) to “monitor the family’s overseas travel itineraries.”
Furthermore, it claimed that Chairman NADRA Tariq Malik had suspended a junior executive, a deputy director, an assistant director, a deputy assistant director, assistant superintendents, and a deputy assistant director.
According to the report, Brigadier (R) Khalid Latif, who was later discovered to be a close friend of one of the accused candidates and the previous DG-ISI, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, oversaw the investigation at first. Due to a conflict of interest, Latif was subsequently replaced by senior officer Ali Javaid.
