Jonathan is the oldest turtle in the world. This is his 190th birthday. He has gone through his two world wars, eight British monarchs and 40 US presidents. His life has seen the first telephone (1876), the first skyscraper (1885), the first powered flight (1903), and the first moon landing (1969).
He was alive when the first photograph of a person was taken in 1838. Now he takes selfies with delighted tourists. He was born before postage stamps (1840) and now appears on postage stamps.
Jonathan threw his three-day birthday party over the weekend at his home in the South Atlantic island and British Overseas Territory of St. Helena. Here he spent most of his long life.
Jonathan is said to have been born in 1832, but may be older. His estimated age is based on the fact that he was of legal age when he was brought to St. Helena in 1882 as a gift to the then Governor-General of the Seychelles.
